SAN PEDRO, CA: Silva Construction (www.silvaconstruction.com), a construction and home remodeling company in Southern California, is giving the public advice on choosing color schemes for their home.
David Clarke, co-owner of Silva Construction, stated: “Choosing colors for the various rooms in your home is very important. The colors you choose will influence how people will feel in that space. Do you want to give your home a more modern feel, or maybe a more homey and traditional feel? No matter what kind of vibe you want to create, choosing the correct colors will be vital. Below, we’ve laid out a few tips to help guide you in choosing the colors for your home.
“When you think of modern, you probably think of grays, silvers, white and black. On the flip side, when you think of a traditional home, you probably think of warmer colors such as browns, dark reds, and beige. This gives a warm and homey feeling.
“There is something called the 3-color rule in choosing interior colors. According to this rule, 60% of a room should be one dominant color, 30% a secondary color, and 10% an accent color. This typically translates to walls being the dominant color, upholstery or flooring as the secondary color, and accessories or artwork providing the accent color.
“So how do you choose those three colors? First of all, you generally want your walls to be a lighter shade of a color, because lighter colors make rooms feel bigger, whereas darker colors tend to make the room feel smaller.
“Secondly, it’s a good idea to check out a color wheel. Colors that are opposite to each other on the color wheel will tend to work well together. Like blue and orange, green and red, and yellow and purple. You usually have one of the combination be the dominant color, with the other being the secondary color. Stay away from yellow, blue and red together, as that combination tends to look garish.
“Of course there are exceptions to these rules and the Golden rule is to pick colors you want to be surrounded by no matter what the general consensus is. If you need help choosing your color scheme for your home, contact us for a free design consultation,” concluded Clarke.
