Before you call a home remodel contractor, do some homework first.

1. Know your financial plan.

Do you have an idea of what it will cost, or at least a budget to work within? If not, call a contractor for a ballpark estimate and work from there.

2. Decide what you need from your contractor.

If budget is not an issue then you probably want a full-service contractor, a company who will take you from start to finish. Their services may include designing, planning, product selection, building, etc. This means you will have a professional contractor responsible for your project and making it into exactly what you envision.

If budget is an issue and you want to be more hands-on, then you probably want a contractor just to assist you with doing the work yourself. In this case you would responsible for many of the tasks, such as going to city hall building department, purchasing material for different projects, etc. Many people are choosing this route. Make sure you choose a contractor who communicates well and has experience assisting customers with such projects.

3. Make a list and check it twice.

Nothing is more aggravating than getting halfway through a project only to realize you forgot something you needed. Silva Construction has developed checklists for many types of home remodel projects. See them here, or click on the image below:
