SAN PEDRO, CA: Silva Construction (https://silvaconstruction.com), a construction and remodeling company in the South Bay area of Southern California, recently took time to answer some common questions about design-build construction. The California construction company has been in the construction and remodeling business for over 40 years and has much experience in this area.
David Clarke, co-owner of Silva Construction, offered answers to some of the most common questions the company gets on the subject of design-build construction:
What is “Design-Build Construction”?
Design-Build is a method of construction that allows homeowners to have one point of contact for both the design and construction phases of their renovation or construction project. At Silva Construction, we would be your Design-Build contractors and we would manage all contracts with each company, such as material providers, subcontractors like plumbing, carpentry, heating and air conditioning, roofing, landscaping, and equipment vendors. This method allows all elements of a project to be in coordination with one another and makes it less stressful for the owner.
Are All Construction Companies Design-Build Contractors?
No. Many contractors would only do the construction phase of your project, requiring you to find a separate architect or designer to do the design phase. Plus, not all would handle coordinating the work of all the subcontractors.
How is Working with a Design-Build Contractor Different?
The designer and contractor collaborate as a unified team right from the start, offering cohesive project suggestions that align with the homeowner’s timetable and financial plan. Any modifications are collectively handled by the entire team, fostering collaborative approaches to problem-solving and innovation, rather than resorting to excuses or shifting blame.
Will a Design-Build Contractor Cost More?
No. The main difference is that everyone involved works better as a team.
